KENNEWICK — DeSales’ Ryan Baumgart took advantage of near-perfect playing conditions here Wednesday with a 2-over-par 74 that paced a field of 17 small-school boys players at Canyon Lakes Golf Course.
Baumgart, a senior and the defending Class B state champion, won by four strokes over Liberty Christian’s Jared Hoey, who carded a 6-over-par 78.
DeSales was the only squad to enter more than four players, therefore team scores were not tabulated.
The Irish’s Jared Konen and Liberty Christian’s Isiah Ojeda matched 81s to finish in a tie for third place, two strokes in front of DeSales’ Bryce Scott, who was alone in fifth place at 83. It was another stroke back to Waitsburg-Prescott’s Dakota Baker, who placed sixth individually with an 84.
Konen’s round was highlighted by two birdies and an eagle on the 374-yard par-4 sixth hole, where he knocked his second shot into the cup with a choked-down pitching wedge from about 110 yards out.
Scott recorded three birdies on his way to 83.
DeSales’ Lucas Lyons shot 87, Dan Schaefer 89 and Scott Kimball 95 to place seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. The Irish’s Andrew Hayunga turned in a 107 and was tied for 12th place with Tri-Cities Prep’s Hogan Jones.
Walla Walla Valley Academy had four entrants in the 17-player field, led by Dylan Trapani, who shot 101 for a 10th-place finish. He was just one shot in front of teammate Paul Trapani, who turned in a 102 for 11th place.
Cameron Fitzgerald of the Knights scored 108 and placed 14th. And WWVA’s fourth player, Chad Stewart, carded 110 for 16th place.
Ashton Montgomery, DeSales’ lone entry in a field of five girls, shot 101 and was the only player in her field to play 18 holes. Four Tri-Cities Prep girls competed over nine holes, led by Rachel Armijo’s 60.
DeSales golfers are back in action today, with the boys competing at Sun Willows in Pasco and the girls traveling to Yakima for play at Suntides.
