Irish trade softball victories with Wildcats

COLTON — DeSales High School’s softball team got the hits it needed behind Ashlyn Lyons’ performance in the circle to garner a 4-2 victory in the opener of a twin bill with Colton here Wednesday.

But in the nightcap, it was the Wildcats who got the timely hits to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 10-9 victory.

“We played pretty steady in the first game,” Irish coach Russ Vera said. “Ashlyn (Lyons) pitched real well, she had nine strikeouts.”

DeSales scored three runs in the first inning, and another in the fifth to counter Colton’s two fourth-inning runs.

“We had a hard time getting their timing down,” Vera said. “They’re slower than we’re used to. But all-in-all we played well as a team.

“In the second game, they got our timing down,” he said. “They got hits when they needed to.”

The Irish again plated three first-inning runs, and took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Wildcats scored five runs in the next two innings to take a 9-8 lead into the seventh.

DeSales came through with the tying run, but couldn’t push the game to extra innings when Colton scored the winning run in the bottom of the stanza.

“We got down after the fifth, but the girls fought back and tied the score,” Vera said. “We thought we were going to extra innings, but our errors are still there.

“But the girls are hitting the ball (10 hits in the opener, 16 in the nightcap). If we continue hitting, we should be fine.”

DeSales, 9-4 overall and 4-0 in Southeast 2B League play, host a league twin bill against Asotin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
