WALLA WALLA — Rachel Schueller picked up a victory in No. 1 singles and Jaime Quaresma and Lexi Swenson teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles, but that was all Walla Walla High School could muster Thursday as it dropped a Mid-Columbia Conference girls tennis match to Kamiakin, 5-2.
“I think two busy weeks of tennis just took its toll today,” Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck wrote in an email. “You could see the girls putting in the effort, but they struggled finding ways to finish points. And Kamiakin is not the type of team that will let us get away with that level of play.”
At No. 3 singles, Danielle Thongdy was the only other Blue Devil to win a set on the day, winning her second set, 6-2, before falling in the third set, 6-3.
Schueller defeated her opponent, Kamiakin’s Joanna Sun, in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-5. Quaresma and Swenson won a 7-5 battle in their opening set and finished off Kamiakin’s Danielle Heath and Brynna DeSanti in the second set, 6-3.
“I am still very proud of how the girls continued to battle even when they were not playing well — it showed a lot of character,” Peck said.
The Wa-Hi girls wrap up their week Saturday with a doubles invite in Richland at 10 a.m.
“It will be a great opportunity to test out our district doubles plans,” Peck said of the invite.
