PENDLETON — Walla Walla High School finished second Thursday at the Pendleton Invite at the par-72 Pendleton Country Club, with Wa-Hi golfer Dean Atkinson carding a 76 to lead the Blue Devils.
Richland ran away with the team title, with four golfers combining for a 306 team score. The Bombers’ Hunter Thompson took medallist after carding a 1-over 73.
Wa-Hi finished with a score of 336 at the nine-team invite. Hermiston came in third at 337, Pendleton fourth in 343, The Dalles 369 for fifth, Kamiakin 374 for sixth, Mac-Hi 376 for seventh, La Grande 389 for eigth and Hood River 489 for ninth.
Atkinson’s 76 was good enough for a tie for third, but he ended fourth on the podium after losing a scorecard playoff.
“Dean had a good day,” Wa-Hi coach James Smith said. “He’s kind of settled in and he’s playing real good right now, but everyone else was kind of up-and-down.”
Nick Atwood carded an 84 for the Blue Devils, Nate Towner 88, Konor Clark an 88, and Troy Aguilar a non-counting 111.
“Where they put the pins on the green today made the course a little harder than you would think,” Smith said of the course. “We didn’t even have anybody make par today, so the course was playing pretty tough.”
The Blue Devils play again Wednesday at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick in their fourth out of five Mid-Columbia Conference POD matches.
