POMEROY — Colton squeezed out a 10-7 win here over Pomeroy High School in the first game of a Southeast 1B league baseball doubleheader and the Wildcats took advantage of 15 walks and ripped 11 hits to complete the sweep with an 18-3 win in the second game.
Two eighth graders, Cade Gingerich and Jared Starin battled Colton ace Jake Straugh in the first game.
The Pirates scored two in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the gap to 4-2, but Colton scored five times in the top of the fifth to put this one away.
“I’m happy with the way they battled their (Colton’s) ace,” Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said of Gingerich and Starin. “They had a little trouble in the fifth and they walked 11. But overall it was not a bad outing.”
Pirate starter Havin Heytvelt had to leave the Pomeory mound with a bad back in the third inning of the second game, and the roof caved in. Colton scored nine in the third and went on to complete an 18-3 five-inning win.
Gingerich led the Pirate offense with two hits in each game. Bryan McGreevy collected two hits in game one and one more in game two.
The Pirates travel to Garfield-Palouse Saturday.
