WALLA WALLA — DeSales and Asotin High Schools entered Saturday’s Southeast 2B baseball doubleheader as co-favorites in the league race and settled nothing.
The Irish rode the pitching of Cam Richman to an 8-3 win in the opener as Richman fired a two-hitter and struck out 13.
And Asotin limited the Irish to two hits to grab the second game 4-3.
In the opener, Panther control issues and an Adam Eskil three-run double highlighted a six-run Irish second. Richman did the rest.
Irish control issues, six walks and two hit batsman, led to a Panther 4-0 lead heading to the home fourth in the second game.
Eskil got one back with a run-scoring single in the fourth. Asotin walked in a run in the fifth, and the Irish scored on an error in the sixth and came to bat in the home seventh down 4-3. Darryl Galloway walked and Richman was hit by a pitch, and with two outs the Irish had the tying run at third and the winning run at second. But Logan Hoeft grounded to third and Asotin nailed Hoeft at first on a bang-bang play to escape the jam.
“We’re just not getting it done offensively,” Irish coach Kim Cox said. “We’ve gotten sloppy with our fundamentals and we’ll go back to work on those Monday. The Asotin kids play the game well, and we need to play better when we play them.”
The Irish host Columbia-Burbank Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Borleske in a non-league game.
