WALLA WALLA — The 15th-ranked Whitman Missionaries mens tennis team swept the Pacific University Boxers, 5-0, in a Northwest Conference tourney semifinal here Saturday.
Whitman plays for the NWC crown today at noon against George Fox University.
On a day that saw the wind gust mightily and the temperature vary drastically, Whitman swept the doubles to take command of the match.
Steven Roston and Andy Riggs rolled at No. 2 to give the Missionaries their first win, 8-0, over Kolin Wong and Alen Suklje.
At No. 3, Matt Tesmond and Sam Sadeghi broke David Yanagita and Brandon Schlack early and then cruised to an 8-3 victory.
Whitman’s Colton Malesovas and Andrew La Cava and Pacific’s Troy Zuroske and Lorne Bulling battled to an 8-8 tie to force a 7-point tiebreaker.
Whitman prevailed 7-5 to sweep all the doubles matches and take a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles.
Roston got out to an early lead on Bulling at No. 4 singles and never looked back, winning 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 2, Andy Riggs battled back from a 3-4 hole to take the first set 6-4 against Pacific’s Suklje. Riggs pounded away with an assortment of shots, and blanked Suklje in the second set 6-0.
The 6-4, 6-0 win clinched the match for Whitman as the Missionaries rolled into today’s final with a 5-0 win.
When the Missionaries take the court at noon today to face the Bruins, they will be seeking their sixth straight NWC title.
The No. 2-seeded Bruins downed third seeded PLU Friday 5-0. Whitman bested the Bruins 8-1 in their only meeting this season.
