RICHLAND — Walla Walla High School’s boys finished second at the Richland Doubles Invite here Saturday, with all four Blue Devil teams garnering two victories.
“This was the first year we have participated in a doubles invite, and it proved to be a good decision,” Wa-Hi coach Bryan Eggart said. “All the boys were able to play at least three matches and get a lot of work in on their doubles game.
“By placing third in the first doubles draw and second in the second, third, and fourth doubles draw, we were able to secure second place as a team in the tournament. The results in the tournament mirrored the standing in league, which was to be expected.”
In the first doubles match, Blue Devils Nick Fuller and Andrew Bateman downed a Pasco duo, 6-2, 6-2, before falling to a Hanford team, 6-0, 6-1. They then picked up a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Chiawana.
At No. 2, Wa-Hi’s Parker Toon and Douglas Rowley downed Pasco 6-2, 7-6, and Hanford, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Richland, 7-6, 6-0.
Lane Dawes and Connor Christensen teamed up at the Blue Devils’ No. 3 spot to defeat Pasco’s team, 6-2, 6-3, and Hanford, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Richland, 6-4, 6-3.
At No. 4, Gerrod Peck and Micah Rambo teamed up for a 6-3, 6-1 over a Pasco duo, and a default win over Hanford before dropping a 4-6, 6-2 (10-8) match to Richland.
Richland won the invite with 15 points, Wa-Hi tallied 11 and Hanford 10.
“All-in-all, it was a good day of tennis,” Eggart said. “We were able to identify where we are strong and where we need some work. With district play only a few weeks down the road, the timing is great.”
