DAYTON — Dayton High School lost a pair of close softball games with Wa-Hi’s junior varsity squad Wednesday, 9-8 and 2-1.
Dayton eighth-grader Savannah McFarland got her first career start in game one, pitching a complete eight innings while giving up nine runs on 12 hits and two home runs.
“She did very well,” Dayton coach Desirae Jones said.
Wa-Hi opened a 6-0 lead up after Keziah Doyle and Maddy Payne each hit two-run bombs in the top of the sixth and looked set to cruise to an easy victory.
But Dayton rallied back with four runs in the bottom innings and two more runs in the seventh to force an eighth inning, when Wa-Hi scored three more runs to put the game away.
“They rallied back,” Jones said. “It was nice to see that they showed some fire that I know they have in them. We pushed it into extra innings, we just couldn’t get those hits in the eighth inning.”
The second game was a pitcher’s duel between Dayton’s Lexus Ward and Wa-Hi’s Brandi Schoessler and Doyle.
The Blue Devils scored runs in the second a third inning, including a single-run blast by Doyle, her second home run of the day, as they built a 2-0 lead. Samantha Harting answered back for the Bulldogs with a long ball of her own in the fourth inning, but neither team was able to score again as Wa-Hi walked away with the sweep.
“The second game was a pretty good game,” Jones said. “Obviously with the low scores the pitchers battled pretty well in that game.”
McFarland got the game-one start to spell usual No. 1 starter Harting, who played centerfield instead.
“Last night was just to play softball and get the girls some more experience,” Jones said, “and I thought that they competed very well.”
The Bulldogs (7-8, 4-4 Southeast 2B) next host Touchet Monday for a 4 p.m. single game.
