WALLA WALLA — New principals for Green Park Elementary and Berney Elementary schools were selected this morning by the Walla Walla School Board.

Gina Yonts, who has been principal of Garrison Middle School the past six years, will lead Green Park Elementary starting July 1. She will take over duties from Mike Lambert, who is retiring from the school district at the end of the current school year.

Christy Krutulis, a Whitman College graduate who is currently principal of Clyde Hill Elementary in Bellevue, will take over for Donna Painter as principal of Berney. Krutulis also assumes duties July 1, following Painter’s retirement from the district.

The salary range for the positions is $100,000-$102,000, district communications director Mark Higgins said.

The School Board voted unanimously to make the appointments. Board member Max Carrera was absent.

Krutulis also served as principal of Stevenson Elementary in Bellevue from 2007-2011 and 12 years as a classroom teacher in that city. She holds a bachelor’s in history from Whitman, a master’s in teaching from University of Puget Sound, and earned her principal certificate from University of Washington.

Yonts spent four years as an assistant principal at Garrison before being named principal six years ago. She spent three years as the district’s truancy coordinator, and 12 as a classroom teacher at Berney.

Yonts has a bachelor’s in elementary education from Central Washington University, and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from Northwest Nazarene College. She received her administrative credential from Washington State University-Tri-Cities.

Higgins said the hiring process for a Garrison Middle School principal to succeed Yonts will begin Monday. Garrison assistant principal Brett Cox is leaving the school at the end of the school year to lead Prescott Schools as superintendent.

Higgins said the plan is to have a new Garrison administrative team in place by the end of June. Laure Quaresma, district assistant superintendent, is leading that effort.
