W-P boys finish second in Dayton

DAYTON — The Waitsburg-Prescott boys finished second and Walla Walla Valley Academy’s girls finished fourth to lead local schools at a District 9 track meet at Dayton High School Wednesday.

W-P’s boys team was the only team to threaten Asotin, which ran way with the boys team scoring with 241 points. W-P finished second with 214 points.

Pomeroy placed fourth with 66 points, WWVA sixth with 48, DeSales seventh with 42, and Dayton eighth with 6.

Asotin also won the girls side in runaway fashion, outscoring its nearest competitor, Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia, 244-135. WWVA finished fourth with 78 points, DeSales fifth with 52, Pomeroy sixth with 43, W-P seventh with 32, and Dayton eighth with 22.

W-P won three boys events. Brendan Donovan took the 110-meter hurdles in 16.82 seconds, Ben Shafer tossed the shot put 47 feet, 4 inches to win that event, and Owen Lanning won the triple jump with a hop, skip and a jump of 40-06.

Pomeroy was the only other local school to win a boys event, with the relay team of Jackson Hall, Bryan McGreevy, Jacob Hirsch and Kyle Darby finishing the 4X400 relay in 3:52.97.

DeSales was led by Isaiah Scheel, who placed second in his first-time running of the 300 hurdles (46.58). The Irish also got a third-place finish in the 4X100, with Braden Kimball, Scheel, Luke Fazzari and Dominic Kjeldgaard finished the loop in 47.65.

“We’ve got some injuries that we’re trying to heal up right now, and we had a couple people sick yesterday,” DeSales coach Mike Scheel said. “Pablo Rodriguez had a really good day with three PRs (personal records), and if I was going to call someone my athlete of the meet, that would probably be him.”

Rodriguez finished seventh in the shot put (34-08) and 27th in the long jump (13-08).

WWVA’s Caleb Atkins finished runner up in both the 100 and 200, and led off the third-place WWVA 4X400 relay team. Wesley Hendrickson won the 300 hurdles and placed second in the 110 hurdles.

Austin Reisdorph led the Pirates with a runner up finish in the 400, and the 4X400 relay team (Jackson Hall, Bryan McGreevym Jacob Hirsch and Kyle Darby) won in 3:52.97.

On the girls side, WWVA’s Hannah Ehlers was a one-girl wrecking crew. She won the 100 hurdles, took second in the 300 hurdles, and took third in both the 100 and 200 to power WWVA to a fourth-place finish overall.

Abbie Underhill, WWVA’s only other girl at the event, placed second in the 400, third in the long jump and 100 hurdles, and fourth in the 200.

Brigit Lyons led the Irish with a win in the 300 hurdles and ran on the second-place 4x100 team.

The next District 9 meet is set for Wednesday.
