Day of firsts for Irish golfers

PASCO — It was a day of firsts for the DeSales golfers at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

Bryce Scott shot a career-best 75 to take co-medalist with Liberty Christian’s Jared Hoey on the par-72 course, and Ashton Montgomery shot a personal-best 85 on the girls side.

DeSales won the boys team scoring, with four golfers carding a 323 to Liberty Christian’s 340. Tri-Cities Prep was the only other team in attendance and did not field enough golfers for a team.

Jerod Konen took third in 79 strokes, Dan Schaefer fourth in 81 and Lucas Lyons fifth with an 88.

DeSales’ Ryan Baumgart and Scott Kimball did not attend the meet.

Emily Baumgart carded a 75 to win the girls scoring. Elizabeth Ruthven rounded out the girls scoring with a personal best 126.

Waitsburg-Prescott’s Dakota Baker carded an 81.

“The greens were pretty rough,” DeSales coach Lon Olson said. “They were still bouncing from being aerated a couple weeks ago and really slow, especially after Wine Valley. That’s part of golf, but it’s a big adjustment.”

For Montgomery, it was her best round since shooting a 91 on the same course last season.

“That’s really a nice step up for Ashton,” Olson said. “To do that at this point in the season with districts coming up is really good.”

Montgomery shot a six-over 42 on the back side of the course to open the round and came back in 43 strokes. She was on pace to score nearer to 80 after birdying the par-3 No. 7, but finished her round with a pair of double bogeys.

“All day it was the best I’ve seen her hit the ball,” said DeSales assistant coach Andrew Adams, who walked the course with Montgomery’s group. “She was hitting these little draws from right to left, right down the middle, and I’ve never seen her hit that shot before.”

The Irish next hit the links Tuesday at a District 9 meet in Pullman at Palouse Ridge.
