WALLA WALLA — After running its Greater Oregon League record to a perfect 8-0 with a sweep, 5-1 and 2-1, of La Grande Friday, McLoughlin High School ventured outside the GOL with a trip to Murr Field here Saturday in non-conference softball action.

The Pioneers battled Washington Class 3A power Holy Names Academy from Seattle and the Cougars hung on to pull out a 5-3 win.

Mac-Hi tallied singletons in the fifth, sixth, and seventh but came up short.

“We had opportunities, but couldn’t get the key hit,” Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. “It was good for us to face a tough team.”

The Pioneers out hit HNA 9-7, but a three-run sixth paved the way for the Cougar win.

Meghan Kimball had three hits for the Pioneers and Stephanie Copeland added two. Colette Robert suffered her first loss of the week after four-straight wins in the circle for Mac-Hi in a complete game effort.

On Friday, Robert tossed a three-hitter in a 5-1 Pioneer win in the GOL opener. Cheyenne Kessler’s two doubles and Megan Reed’s two hits gave Robert all the offensive support she needed.

The Tigers, trailing 1-0 in the second game, loaded the bases in the third. Robert was summoned from the bullpen and allowed only one of the inherited runners to score.

Robert shut down La Grande the rest of the way, and Mac-Hi came to bat in the home seventh with a chance to win. Kessler led off the Pioneer seventh with a single and Jenny Field ran for her. A Nicole Hendley single got Field to third. Copeland drove a sac-fly to right and Field scooted home with the winning run.

The Pioneers stand 17-5 overall, 8-0 in the GOL and host GOL foe Baker Saturday.
