Norma Jean Nelson of Walla Walla was born June 3, 1931, and died at her cottage residence on April 25, 2013.
She is survived by husband, Charles R. (Chuck) Nelson; two daughters, Cheryl R. Hodgins and Jeanette D. Nelson-Noirot; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services will be held at the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater, 11 a.m., Monday, April 29, 2013. Followed by internment at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.
Jean was born in LaGrande, to Gladys Zoe and Archie I. Hoover. Her first job was at the age 13 (1944) for the Civil Aeronautic Authority for $1 per hour. Her lifelong career of civic and professional accomplishments included 17 years as the director of the Dental Assistant Educational Program at Blue Mountain Community College. Jean was a lifetime member of the Grand Chapter of Oregon Eastern Star, Chapter #47 O.E.S. She worked tirelessly for decades with programs that offered continued education for women and chaired such groups through the ADAA and other local charities.
Jean and her husband spent many years traveling the world, experiencing the varying cultures and returning with artifacts both of art and educational value. She and Chuck started boating in 1951 and continue to maintain the vessel “Third Sensation.” Gathering their family and friends for a summer of cruising the inland passage and coastlines of Oregon, Washington and Southern Canada was by far her most loved activity.
Donations in her name can be made to the P.E.O. Education Loan Fund or the Scholar Awards. The family would like to encourage your support of the local Alzheimer’s Support Group and the local Hospice office.
