WALLA WALLA — Despite losing All-American outfielder Tyler Pfeffer to a shoulder injury early in the opener, Whitworth University swept Whitman College 8-3 and 13-9 in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.

The visiting Pirates improved to 13-22-1 overall and 8-15 in the NWC with their second and third wins in a row. The Missionaries dropped to 14-21, 7-16.

The teams will complete the three-game series today at noon.

Dan Scheibe settled down after a rough start to earn a complete game victory as the Pirates rallied from an early 3-0 deficit for a win in the series opener.

Trailing 3-0 through four innings, Danny Jordan got Whitworth on the board with a solo home run leading off the fifth.

The Pirates took the lead with four runs in the sixth. A walk, a hit and an error loaded the bases and the first run came home on a balk against Whitman pitcher Dakota Matherly. After another walk loaded the bases again, Jeremy Druffel tied the game with an RBI single. Jordan followed with a sacrifice fly to center field and Blake Thoren added a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Bucs a 5-3 lead.

Whitworth pulled away with three runs in the ninth. Nick Motsinger had an RBI double and Gerhard Muelheims added an RBI single. Thomas Wakem’s sacrifice fly drove in the final run.

Cameron Young went 3-4 with an RBI for Whitman.

Matherly went 5.0 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits. He fell to 0-4.

The Pirates built a 13-3 lead and then held off a late rally by the Missionaries to sweep the doubleheader. Druffel led the way with five runs batted in.

Whitman got two runs back in the bottom of the second to pull within 5-3. Josh Davis singled in a run in the fourth to increase the Bucs’ lead back to 6-3.

Whitworth broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning. Druffel had a two-run single and Jordan Pearson added a two-run hit to center field with two outs.

Erik Nikssarian’s RBI double in the eighth inning gave the Pirates a 13-3 lead. But Whitman rallied with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Aaron Cohen had an RBI triple and Moyes followed with an RBI single in the rally. The final two runs scored on a passed ball.

Cohen added an RBI single in the ninth before Jason Renner closed the game in relief of Nick Scourey. Scourey improved to 2-5 after throwing eight innings. He allowed eight runs on eight hits, but only three of those runs were earned.
