PASCO — Franklin County officials say the Juniper Dunes Recreation Area north of Pasco could be a tourist attraction if there were a public road to reach it.

The Tri-City Herald reports about 30,000 people a year visit the 20-square-mile area, but they have to use private roads, many of which are posted “no trespassing.”

Officials toured the area Monday as they planned to apply for a $1 million federal grant to build a four-mile road.

Juniper Dunes is one of 37 sites in Washington competing for $27 million in funding from the Federal Lands Access Program.
