Artist Colleen Monette to teach encaustic art techniques in Dayton

DAYTON — Artist Colleen Monette will teach a two-day weekend encaustic art workshop, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 21-22 at the Monica Stobie studio, 620 N. Touchet Road.

Saturday, the class will start with a brief history of encaustic painting and basic instruction on safety. Then students will be introduced to the basics of painting with pigmented wax, including fusing, incising and layering.

The many ways to manipulate the wax through collage, stenciling and embedding, as well as solvent and photo transfers will be taught.

There will be time to explore and experiment with 3D sculpture and building forms.

Following the class on Saturday there will be a rooftop wine reception at the Weinhard Hotel, 235 E. Main St. until 10 p.m.

On day two will be further experimenting and waxing the forms built the day before.

The cost for the workshop is $185 a person which includes all the materials and tools for creating an encaustic work, lunch, snacks and the wine reception.
