Leroy Edwin Haste

December 27, 1915 – August 10, 2013

Leroy Edwin Haste, 97, passed away

peacefully August 10, 2013 in Alabaster,

Alabama. Leroy was born to James

Edwin Haste and Dora Davis Haste

on December 27, 1915 in Gueydan,

Louisiana. His father was in the farm

implement business.

In 1924 the family moved to Spokane,

Washington to open a grocery store and

gas station.

In 1929 when things were getting hard and money was

scarce the family moved to Kennewick, Washington to a

ten-acre fruit farm. Leroy’s father died in 1931 and along

with his older brother Lloyd he worked to help support their

mother Dora.

On September 23, 1935 Leroy and Mildred Ruth

Moothart were married in Culbertson, Montana and moved

to Kennewick, Washington the same year. In 1936 a son,

Leroy “Floyd” was born. In 1938 a daughter Donna Jean was

born. The family moved back to Culbertson in 1939 for a

few months, then on to Southern California for a short time.

In 1944 while living in Kennewick they decided to purchase

acreage in Pasco, Washington. In 1947 while visiting family

in Culbertson, Montana, Mildred was asked to teach

in a “dug-out” country school which she did, returning

to Washington State in June 1948. From 1948-1950 the

family moved several more times as Mrs. Haste taught in

small schools in Mikkalo and Olex, Oregon, and Leroy was

employed by two large wheat ranchers.

In 1951 the family sold their Pasco farm and returned

to Culbertson, Montana to manage Mrs. Haste’s mother’s

farm. In 1953 a son Dorlin James was born. In 1959 the

family decided to sell the Montana farm and moved to

a Milton-Freewater, Oregon property which included a

cherry and prune orchard and a few small rentals. Mildred

Haste passed away on March 14, 1980.

On April 19, 1981 Leroy married Helen Wilson

Merklin. They sold the Milton-Freewater farm in 1985 and

moved to Rogue River, Oregon. During their early years

together, they enjoyed taking their RV to the beach and

listening to the ocean sounds. Helen passed away in 2010.

Leroy lived in College Place, Washington with his son,

Dorlin, and daughter-in-law, Judy, for a couple of years

before moving to Verbena, Alabama to be with his daughter

and her family.

He enjoyed reading books, doing word puzzles and

vacationing on the Gulf to watch birds, fish, the water and

sunsets. He was a member of the Milton-Freewater, Oregon

Seventh-day Adventist Church, and had been attending the

Clanton, Alabama Adventist Church since moving there.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna and her

husband, Bob, Ernest of Verbena, Alabama; daughter-inlaw,

Judy (Dorlin) Haste of College Place, Washington;

seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two greatgreat-

grandchildren; two step-children, Linda Barns and

Larry Merklin; six step-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Cora

Haste, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded by

his brother, Lloyd Haste; wife, Mildred Haste; son, Floyd

Haste; wife, Helen Haste; son, Dorlin Haste; and step-son,

Jim Merklin.

Memorial services will be at the Clanton Seventh-day

Adventist Church in Clanton, Alabama, August 31, 2013 at

2:30 pm; also at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Milton

Freewater, Oregon on September 21, 2013 at 4:00 pm.

Private inurnment will be September 20, 2013 at Mount

Hope Cemetery, College Place, Washington.
