Harvest under way at Woodward Canyon Winery

Crush began at Woodward Canyon Winery early this week in what is believed to be the first grape harvest of the season in the Walla Walla Valley.

Darcey Fugman-Small, owner and general manager of the Lowden winery, said in a release four clones of estate sauvignon blanc were harvested into a field blend at the winery’s estate vineyard Monday. Whole-cluster press took place and juice was moved into stainless steel tanks for fermentation Tuesday, she said. Owner/winemaker Rick Small rang the on-site bell, signaling the start of the 2013 crush.

Woodward Canyon will ring in Labor Day weekend at the winery, 11920 W. U.S. Highway 12, with pulled pork sandwiches featured in the Reserve House Restaurant. The tasting room will be closed Monday. The Reserve House Restaurant operates Friday through Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
