PENDLETON — McLoughlin High’s cross country team kicked off the 2013 season with some impressive finishes at McKay Park here Thursday.
Josie Lonai led the way for the Pioneers with a second-place finish, with the Mac-Hi junior coming in at 21:29 behind Pendleton’s Delaney Clem’s 5,000-meter time of 20:46.
Fellow Mac-Hi junior Susie Romero-diaz finished sixth in 22:20, and sophomore Mindy Harmon came in at 33:56.
“It was a great showing for Josie and Susie, especially for the first meet,” Pioneer coach John Milleson said. “It was terribly hot and a terribly slow course with long grass. But they came to run, and run well.”
On the boys’ side, Mac-Hi junior Austin Cousineau turned in a 10th-place time of 19:05, behind runners from Class 5A schools Hermiston and Pendleton.
“We were hoping Austin would finish in the top 20,” Milleson said. “He surprised all of us with a top 10 finish behind 5A schools. It’s a big, big step for him. He was solid the whole way.”
Hermiston’s Hayden Scott won the 5,000-meters in 17:49
Pioneer junior Cody Harmon finished in 21:42, senior Mario Carrillo came in at 22:13, junior Tristan Warne was just behind him in 22:15, and junior Raudel Garcia finished in 23:41.
Mac-Hi next heads to Hermiston on Sept. 7.
