WALLA WALLA — Bryce Davis of Ovalo, Texas, was the big winner during the first two rounds of the Frontier Days Rodeo steer roping Friday morning in the Walla Walla Fairgrounds arena.
Davis won the first go-round of the four-round event and tied for first in the second round. Two more rounds were contested Saturday morning to determine the rodeo’s 2013 steer roping champion.
Davis roped and tripped his first steer in 12.7 seconds and collected $872.42 for his run. He was even faster in the second round with a 12.5 clocking.
However, Jess Tierney of Hermosa, S.D., was just as quick and the two ropers split the top two money positions, $797.21 each.
For the day, Davis earned $1,669.63 and was the only roper to place in the money during both of Friday’s rounds.
Naturally, Davis’ 25.2 time on two head was good for the lead in the average, with Cody Lee of Gatesville, Texas, holding down second place with a time of 28.5 seconds on two runs. Davis placed third in the first round with a 14.1 time that was worth $571.58, but his 14.4 time in the second round finished out of the money.
Rocky Patterson of Pratt, Kan., pocketed $722 for a 13.7-second run that was good for second place in the first round, but he likewise finished out of the money in the second round with a 15.4 time that left him third in the average at 29.1.
Tierney was not among the leaders in the average despite his strong showing in the second round.
Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, the Professional Cowboys Association’s defending all-around champion and current leader stood fourth in the average going into Saturday’s final two rounds of the event.
Brazile added a modest $150.42 to his season winnings with a third-place finish in the first round with a time of 15.2, then roped and tripped his second steer in 14.6 for a 29.8 mark on two head.
