MILTON-FREEWATER — The Mac-Hi boys basketball team opened its season with a bang Friday night, defeating Dayton 50-32 in the first round of the Milton-Freewater Open Invite.

Carlos Angel led the Pioneers with 16 points and sophomore Hunter Yensen added 12.

The Pioneers trailed 12-11 after one quarter and 17-11 at the 6:52 mark of the second.

Mac-Hi’s Adrian Zaragoza nailed a pair of 3-pointers to start Mac-Hi back on a 12-4 run to end the second quarter.

Yensen helped in the 12-4 Mac-Hi run with a 3-pointer from the left corner and another 2-point jumper. Ezari Correa contributed a runner in the lane.

After holding a 23-21 advantage at the half, the Pioneers poured it on in the third period, outscoring Dayton 18-7 to lead by 13 going into the final period.

“They’re (Dayton) a good defensive ball club,” Mac-Hi coach Travis Chester said. “Being early (in the season), we’re not where we need to be. We kept working and chipping away. We finally really came around in that second half against a good basketball team. It was good to see.”

Mac-Hi cruised to the win with a 9-4 fourth.

Angel had 10 points in the second half. Jacob Podolski pulled down a team-high nine boards as Mac-Hi edged the Bulldogs on the boards, 25-23.

Cruz Ramirez had 12 boards and five points to lead Dayton. Logan Hays added eight points, and Ian Smay had six.

“That is a tough team to handle,” Chester said. “Dayton was pretty well balanced and not just one guy to stop on offense. “
