WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla High School raced to a 33-24 advantage at intermission here Saturday in non-conference boys basketball action. Moses Lake turned up the pressure in the second half and held the Blue Devils to only 14 points and the Chiefs dropped Wa-Hi from the unbeaten ranks with a 54-47 win.

“We came out pretty well,” Wa-Hi coach John Golden said of the first half. “They (the Chiefs) got after it defensively (in the second half). It (the defensive pressure) bit us a little bit in the third and fourth quarters. We quit hitting shots, we quit scoring. They made us pay.”

Gabe Porter scored 11 of his game-high 20 in the first period to pace Wa-Hi to a 15-14 lead after the first eight minutes. Wa-Hi, with five different players scoring, hit seven-of-15 shots from the floor in the second quarter and expanded the lead to the nine-point advantage.

The tide turned in the third as Wa-Hi only got deuces from Eric Klicker, Porter, and Darnell Handcox, plus a Dylan Steele free throw as the Chiefs out scored the Blue Devils 13-7 and went to the fourth down 40-37.

Following two free throws from Cesar Sandoval, Derek Martinez came off the Chief bench to drain a trey and the Chiefs grabbed a 42-40 lead. Steele answered with a three as Wa-Hi retook the lead at 43-42 with 6:00 left. Two free throws from Ricardo Gonzalez followed by another 3-point bomb from Martinez and Moses Lake had the lead for good at 47-43 with 4:45 left.

“They brought Martinez in off the bench and he hit a couple of threes,” Golden said. “That opened the gap a little bit and we couldn’t recover. We had a hard time scoring in the fourth (three-of-13 from the floor). We’ve got guys that can score, but some nights, the ball is not going to go in.”

Porter finished with 20 and Steele added eight to pace the Wa-Hi offense. Handcox with nine boards and Ross Lake with seven paced the Blue Devils on the glass.

Sandoval led the Chiefs with 16.

In Friday non-conference action, the Blue Devils overcame a 10-point third-quarter deficit to fight back and tie Davis at 52-52 heading to the fourth. Wa-Hi went on a 21-9 fourth-quarter run to pull out a 73-61 win. Klicker led the way with 27 points, Porter added 17, and Handcox chipped in 14.

Wa-Hi stands 2-1 on the year and will host Pendleton Tuesday.

“We saw a lot of good things this week,” Golden commented. “It’s a good first week. We still have to get some guys in shape. Stamina is a little weak. We saw a lot of guys kind of fitting into some roles. But, we also saw a lot of things we need to work on.”
