WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Community College’s men’s basketball team built a 23-point halftime lead Saturday night and never looked back in an 85-59 victory over a club team from Gonzaga University in the final game of the annual Warrior Classic in the Dietrich Dome.

WWCC opened Classic action on Friday night with a 68-59 loss to Mt. Hood.

In other Classic men’s contests, Blue Mountain tripped up Gonzaga, 73-66, on Friday before losing to Mt. Hood on Saturday, 57-50.

Joel Underdahl came off the bench to lead the Walla Walla offense on Saturday with 18 points. He also claimed a team-high nine rebounds.

Four other Warriors tallied in double figures. Eric Harr scored 11 points while Caleb Bravard, Austin Nooner, and reserve Nate Richards chipped in with 10 points apiece.

“We cane out with good energy in the first half and did what we wanted to do,” WWCC coach Jeff Reinland said. “Then we came out in the second half and fell in love with the 3-point shot.”

Walla Walla made just 5-of-17 shots from long distance after halftime and went 13-of-37 for the game.

On the bright side, Reinland highlighted contributions made by Underdahl, Richards, and fellow reserve Seth Alden (six points and three rebounds in 12 minutes of action).

“They gave us a big lift,” Reinland said. “We have a lot of competition for our starting lineup heading into league. We have a lot of guys coming off the bench and playing hard.”

On Friday, Mt. Hood’s Mac Johnson proved to be a genuine pain in WWCC’s neck. The 6-foot-8 post scored 32 points on 14-of-16 shooting in the low block and secured a game-high 12 rebounds.

Walla Walla made just 21 of its 60 field-goal tries — 6-of-26 from 3-point land.

“Our offense was not good,” Reinland said. “They did a good job of guarding us. I was impressed how they defended us. They’re a good club.

“We couldn’t get a loose ball,” Reinland said. “Nobody’s making plays for us. We have a lot of things to focus on. We’re not off to the start we wanted.”

Satchel Schetzle led the Warriors with 16 points. Dallas Reich and Richards had 10 points each.

The Warriors will be at Bellevue Community College next weekend for an eight-team tournament which commences Friday.
