MILTON-FREEWATER — Dayton’s girls basketball team stormed Mac-Hi’s gym Friday night, defeating the Pioneers in convincing fashion, 42-26, in the first round of the four-team Mac-Hi tournament.

Stanfield defeated Helix in the earlier game, 24-20.

Lexie Ramirez grabbed five rebounds and scored six points to lead the Bulldogs against Mac-Hi. Sidney Andrews added eight points and Shayla Currin contributed six in the low-scoring affair.

Mac-Hi’s Makia Carlson led the way for her squad again, scoring nine points and pulling down 11 boards.

Carlson scored a bucket to open the game, but Dayton went on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter with a 9-2 lead. Mac-Hi struggled on offense in the first frame, committing 15 turnovers.

Mac-Hi finished the game with 34 turnovers thanks to a ferocious Dayton press.

“I wasn’t expecting the press for a lot of the game,” first-year Pioneer coach Todd Cunnington said. “It was difficult for us to set up in our offense sets. We couldn’t really get our offense going. You could see the girls revert back to what they’ve known in the past, which is understandable.

“We need more screens, more getting our posts open down low and freeing up our shooters out on elbows and lanes.”

Dayton poured it on in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Pioneers 31-14 to take a 24-point lead into the fourth period.

Mac-Hi responded, outscoring the Bulldogs 10-2 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough for the Pioneers to avoid a loss in their first game of the season.

“We started to get the ball to fall in the middle of the game,” Dayton coach Clayton Strong said. “We had some good looks early but couldn’t get them to fall. It took a while into the first quarter before we could get our defensive intensity up to where we wanted it to be.”
