WALLA WALLA — Echo’s Kylie King drained a 3-pointer with two minutes gone in girls non-conference basketball action in DeSales’ gym Tuesday.

King’s trey gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead, but that was the last hurrah for Echo, as the DeSales defense limited the Cougars to 18 points the rest of the way and the Irish opened their season with a 48-20 win.

“We can defend and we can defend in the full court,” Irish coach Tim Duncan said. “We’re going to do that to teams. We didn’t play it as well as we can position-wise, but our kids worked really hard. Anytime you work hard on defense, you can make up some deficiencies.”

Emily Baumgart answered King’s triple with a pair of free throws as the Irish took the lead for good at 4-3 with 5:15 left in the first.

The Irish — behind two buckets in the low post from Allison Wujek, a Baumgart deuce off a Claire Conley feed, and a Conley free throw — outscored the Cougars 7-2 over the rest of the first period to lead 11-5 after one.

A 17-point Irish second quarter, sparked by four points from Wujek and four from Hannah Leahy, put this one away as DeSales went to intermission up 28-10.

The Irish defense limited the Cougars to only six shots from the floor and forced seven turnovers as Teresa Acock hit DeSales’ only trey of the game to lead a 12-4 third-period Irish run. DeSales took a commanding 40-14 lead to the fourth.

The Irish, despite only shooting 30 percent (on 16-of-54 from the floor) had a balanced attack.

Wujek, from inside, led the way with 12 points.

Acock finished with nine, and Baumgart added eight.

“I’m not overly concerned about our shooting,” Duncan said. “We’re going to shoot the ball (better). We’re going to make a higher percentage inside as the year goes on because our kids will play with more confidence. We were antsy (first-game jitters) tonight. We’ll be all right.”

Ashlyn Lyons dished out five assists for the Irish, and Conley grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead DeSales to a 41-32 rebounding edge.

DeSales (1-0) travels to Mac-Hi Friday.
