Milton-Freewater Rotary Club hosted Col. Christian F. Rees, director of the installations division at Joint Force Headquarters of the Oregon National Guard in Salem.

The colonel discussed progress on a major refurbishment of the Milton-Freewater Armory. Work is expected to be completed by early February.

The $3.5 million project includes work on the main building, several classrooms, a new entrance off Main Street and the Drill Hall, which will include a kitchen.

The Guard is working on a cost structure in terms of making the facility available for local events by community groups such as Rotary and the Milton-Freewater Chamber of Commerce to provide additional funding for the facility. Cost cutting has taken its toll on operating funds, he said.

The facility, which supports 1186th Military Police Co. activities, will be ready for a community open house sometime in early March.

The Oregon Army National Guard maintains 3.1 million square feet of infrastructure statewide, while supporting the training and readiness needs of approximately 6,300 soldiers.
