Barbara Elaine Whaley, 81, passed away on Dec. 6, 2013, at Regency at The Park. She was born in Promise, Ore., on March 10, 1932. She grew up in Northeastern Oregon, graduating in 1950 from Wallowa High School, Wallowa, Ore., then continued her education at Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande. She was married to James B. Whaley on Jan. 26, 1952. She later completed her bachelor’s degree in education, became a teacher and taught at Umapine, Ore., until her retirement. Barbara and Jim were very active members in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were also great bowlers and were members of the local Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #26. They loved to dance and had many friends in the community.
Jim preceded Barbara in death in 1998. He was a teacher for many years at Paine Grade School, then at Garrison Junior High School. After retiring he moved on to work at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Hospital and, later, Sears, in Walla Walla. He was also a retired U.S. Naval Reserve veteran. Following his death, Barbara married Robert Jones, who currently resides in College Place.
Barbara’s parents, Gilbert R. and Sadie Lyon; and one sister, Colleen Neustal, have predeceased her. She is survived by her four children, Deborah E. Hunsecker of San Manuel, Ariz., James B. Whaley III of Florida, Michael J. Whaley of Colton, Wash., and Pamela D. Collopy of College Place; six grandchildren, James Mason, Stacey Winn, Amanda Collopy, and Jared, James and Sean Whaley; and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janice O’Malley and Cheryl Hafer; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. and services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at noon at Herring-Groseclose Funeral Home.
