Irish girls bolt past Riverside Christian

YAKIMA — DeSales didn’t get the test it hoped for here Tuesday night during its final game before launching Southeast 2B District girls basketball play this weekend.

The Irish bolted to a 22-9 first-quarter lead, then held Riverside Christian to seven points over the final three periods en route to a 63-16 non-league victory.

“It was not what we were looking for, especially from a team that made regionals last year,” DeSales coach Tim Duncan said. “As it turns out, Riverside Christian is a young team. They lost four players to graduation and two others who transferred to other schools.”

DeSales bumped its season record to 3-1 and opens league action at home Friday against Dayton, then travels to Asotin for a Saturday night district counter.

“We’re playing the two teams we need to beat this weekend,” Duncan said, suggesting the Bulldogs and Panthers are contenders for the Southeast 2B District title this winter. “You need to win your home games against the teams you need to beat. If we can do that and then go on the road and beat Asotin, that could put us in the driver’s seat pretty early.”

The Irish are still adjusting to the loss of point guard Molly Lesko, who injured her knee during preseason practice and is scheduled for surgery on Jan. 8, Duncan said.

“Obviously, it lessens our margin for error,” Duncan said of the loss of Lesko, who was the Irish’s starting point guard last season as a freshman. “We’re not quite as deep and it takes away one of our better perimeter players and forces them to play the point.”

Sophomore Teresa Acock has taken over the point guard duties and senior Ashlyn Lyons, who starts at one of the wing positions, will also see some time running the Irish offense.

Senior Allison Wujek led the Irish here Tuesday night with 15 points and seven rebounds. Lyons contributed 13 points and Acock scored 11.
