Updated: Body of Dayton teen found at transfer station

DAYTON — A Columbia County Transfer Station employee discovered the body of 17-year-old Cody J. Snider of Dayton lying inside the fence near the public access road below Rock Hill at approximately 10:50 a.m. Saturday.

Columbia County Prosecutor Rea Culwell said and investigation is continuing but the death appears to be accidental.

Investigators believe the boy fell about 150 feet from the top of the cliff above the waste transfer station as early as Thursday. Culwell said hazardous weather conditions last week may have been a factor and described the terrain above the station as “extremely treacherous.”

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the deputy coroner were called to investigate on Saturday.

Fire District 3 personnel assisted deputies in examining the scene, which required accessing the sheer cliff above where the teen’s body was found.

The transfer station, at 500 S. Cottonwood Street in Dayton, is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Deputy Coroner June Riley said the county will not conduct an autopsy, though Snider’s family may request one.
