DAYTON — The Dayton girls basketball team beat Tri-Cities Prep 42-28 on Saturday behind a stalwart defensive effort.

“That’s any coaches’ dream that you’re sharing the basketball,” Dayton coach Clayton Strong said of the passing. “I didn’t realize it was that high. I was pretty proud of them for that. We made some pretty good passes out of double teams in the post — that was fun to see.”

Freshman Jenna Phillips led Dayton with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Lexi Ward chipped in eight points and Madison Mings added six. The Bulldogs only scored three points in the first quarter, but after upping the defensive intensity, Strong said the offense got rolling.

“We got some pretty good looks in the first quarter and we executed our stuff well,” Strong said. “We just didn’t execute around the basket. As we kind of went along, we let our defense spur our offense. We got a lot of easy baskets in transition. In the second half, we kind of combined the two.”
