WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Community College men’s basketball team sealed a spot in the Walla Walla Crossover Tournament Championship with a 91-74 win against Umpqua on Saturday.

Walla Walla will face Bellevue today in the title game. The Warriors beat Bellevue 82-81 earlier this season.

Against Umpqua, Walla Walla’s Satchel Schetzle continued his strong play with 20 points and eight rebounds. Schetzle scored 32 points to lead Walla Walla to a 118-92 win against Gray’s Harbor on Friday.

“He’s as good as he wants to be,” Reinland said of Schetzle. “Satchel is so athletic, he takes things for granted a little bit. Overall, I’m really pleased with him. He played well and he played all 40 (minutes) tonight. He’s our best athlete so we kind of expect that.”

The Warriors’ perimeter scoring came through again, as Walla Walla nailed 15 3-pointers, compared to only six for Umpqua. Prince Lacey nailed a team-high five 3’s en route to 17 points.

Lacey nailed a game-high eight 3-pointers on Friday night.

“It was good, it wasn’t great,” Reinland said of the Warriors’ shooting. “We were 15-of-34 from 3 — that’s pretty decent. It just seemed like we shot worse tonight because we had a lot of open shots we didn’t make. When you’re getting open looks, as a coach, you want them all to go in. But we shot it pretty well.”

Walla Walla held a 21-point lead in the second half, but the Warriors inability to run its offensive plays allowed Umpqua to cut the lead to 12, Reinland said.

With the championship game looming, Reinland said the Warriors must cut down on their offensive miscues.

“We had trouble remembering our plays tonight and we looked really scatter-brained out there for some reason,” Reinland said. “We’re going to get into shoot around tomorrow and talk about some things and try to improve.”

Walla Walla also had four other players reach double figures behind Schetzle and Lacey, as Seth Alden scored 17, Caleb Bravard added 13 and both Dallas Reich and Austin Nooner chipped in 11.

Now, the Warriors have their eyes set on the title tilt against Bellevue.

“We got to come out and play better defense,” Reinland said. “I thought both nights our defense struggled a little bit. We’re going to have to shore it up a little bit. Bellevue likes to drive it and that’s one of the problems we’ve had.”
