WALLA WALLA — After scoring only 40 points in a 51-40 loss to Chiawana Friday, Walla Walla High School shot the lights out on the way to a 68-43 Mid-Columbia Conference girls basketball win over Kennewick here Saturday.

“The goal was to work on execution,” Blue Devil coach Jill Meliah said. “I feel like we are settling for too many jumpers, so we tried to get it into the paint more. We still have work to do, but offensively (tonight) we took a step in the right direction.”

Mikayla Ferenz took that first step as she buried five of her first six shots from the field and scored 12 in the first eight minutes to lead Wa-Hi to a 22-12 advantage after one.

The hot shooting continued as Wa-Hi (3-3 overall, 1-1 MCC) knocked down 7-of-13 shots from the field in the second period with Madi Doepker’s seven points leading the way. The Blue Devils were in control as they hit 16-of-29 attempts, 55 percent, in the first half and took a commanding 45-23 lead to intermission.

“We’re trying to get back into regular-season play,” senior co-captain Jaiden Hodnefield said. “Our coaches have been harping on us to get our mind set in the game. Sometimes, it (the hot shooting) just happens.”

“We are typically a good shooting team,” Meliah said. “It was nice to have a night when we were on. We talked about taking advantage of our size as we had a huge advantage. With our wing span, we tried to force them into bad decisions. We did a good job of that.”

Wa-Hi substituted liberally and held serve in the second half. 10 players played and each one got into the scoring column. Mikayla Ferenz finished with 18 points and Doepker chipped in 10. The Blue Devils accumulated 20 assists as Kiana Molitor led the way with four assists. Pamela Patton came off the bench to lead with 13 boards as Wa-Hi held 40-24 rebounding edge.

“It’s always nice when everybody gets to play,” Meliah said. “Everybody scored and we developed as a team.”

“It’s one of our favorite things when everybody on the bench gets to score,” Hodnefield said. “That happened tonight and we are all super excited about it. We need to get to our peak. I believe we can beat Chiawana. We’ll keep working at it (getting better).”

Chiawana’s Hodgins sisters proved too much Friday in the MCC opener. With younger sister Brayden leading all scorers with 21 and older sister Delaney chipping in 14, Chiawana downed the Blue Devils 51-40.

The RiverHawks led 18-16 at the half, but Brayden Hodgins fired home eight in a 18-12 third-quarter Chiawana run and Wa-Hi never recovered. Mikayla Ferenz led the Blue Devils with 13 and Doepker, who was in early foul trouble, scored 11, all in the second half.

Wa-Hi travels to the Lewiston Tournament Friday.
