Man jailed in Oregon shooting over Christmas gifts

PORTLAND — A Portland man shot his friend in the leg after accusing him and his girlfriend of stealing his Christmas presents, authorities said.

Martin Luther Hartley, 44, pleaded not guilty at his video arraignment Monday afternoon to assault with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Officers responded early Sunday to a northeast Portland hospital, where Keytar Donesouda, 31, went for treatment. Donesouda and his girlfriend, Xaykham Chanthavong, told police they were visiting Hartley’s trailer late Saturday when their friend, armed with a .22-caliber rifle, accused them of stealing the gifts.

Hartley said he had it all on video and then fired a shot that wounded Donesouda, the couple told investigators.

Hartley was in the Multnomah County Jail and is to appear in court Jan. 3.
