Johnson leads T-O past Pirates

OAKESDALE — Pomeroy ran into a hot shooting Jacey Johnson here Saturday in Southeast 1B girls basketball action. Johnson scored 29 points to lead Tekoa-Oakesdale to a 60-38 win over the visiting Pirates.

The Pirates (5-3 overall, 1-3 in league) hung around, as the NightHawks only led 20-15 at the break. But Johnson and the turnover bug — the Pirates had 30 for the game — took over in the second half as T-O out scored Pomeroy 40-23 to pull out the win.

The Pirates played without Ireland Mayfield (family commitment) and Kacey Halbert (injured), but got a double-double, 20 points and 15 rebounds, from Mackenzie Monahan and nine points from Esther Schuh. But a 7-for-18 performance at the line for Pomeroy and 30 turnovers were too much to overcome.

“We were short-handed,” Pirates coach Nettie Severs said. “The girls played hard, but too many turnovers and poor free throw shooting. We’ll hope to get our girls back and give them a better battle at our place.”

The Pirates host Liberty Christian Saturday.
