PENDLETON — Walla Walla High School finished fifth and Mac-Hi took ninth here at the Free-Berry wrestling tournament Saturday.

Host Pendleton won the 15-team tournament with 291 points. The Blue Devils, led by Noe Gonzalez’ second-place finish in the 126-pound class, scored 152.5 to take fourth. The Pioneers got a third-place finish from Riley Chester at 106 to spark Mac-Hi to 98 points and its ninth-place finish.

“He’s wrestling well,” Wa-Hi head coach Dallas Jones said of Gonzalez. “He’s providing some good solid leadership for those young guys. He provides a solid, quiet leadership role. He’s not very vocal but he leads by example.”

Brian Ocampo, wrestling at 120, was the next highest Blue Devil finisher as Ocampo went 3-1 in the tournament and took third. Andrew Granchukoff at 171 and Kurt Blackman at 275 both earned fourth-place points for the Blue Devils. Joshua Pettyjohn wrestled to a 4-1 record and earned fifth for Wa-Hi at 113. At 171, Ely Kimball lost to teammate Granchukoff and settled for fifth. Barrera Martin (138) and Donovan Romero (195) wrestled to sixth-place finishes for the Blue Devils. Josh Camacho (106) finished seventh, Keanu Biagi (132), and Ammon Juhasz (152) each claimed eighth-place points for the Blue Devils.

“It was kind of what we’ve been doing all year,” Jones said. “We keep getting better. We don’t really have any standouts, but we have a lot of kids who are working hard and getting better everyday. They keep progressing every time we step on the mat. We’re a pretty young team, but the kids are working hard and it’s starting to show.”

For the Pioneers, Cole Skramstad posted a 3-2 tournament mark and finished fourth in the 138 class. Mac-Hi picked up three seventh-place finishes as Jesus Diaz (120), Blake Yensen (152), and TJ Simpson (220) all finished in seventh. Preston Tarpley (138), Gabe McAlester (145), and Gregory Moreno (275) each earned eighth-place finishes for the Pioneers.
