WALLA WALLA — The DeSales and Weston-McEwen girls basketball teams each split a pair of games during the annual D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic that wrapped up Saturday night in the Irish Gym.

On Saturday, the TigerScots doubled up The Bush Blazers, 54-27, while DeSales blew a 10-point halftime lead in a 33-27 loss to University Prep.

The result roles were reversed on Friday. The Irish burned the Blazers, 68-20, and Weston-McEwen suffered a 48-32 setback to University Prep.

The Irish led 21-11 at the break, but made just 1-of-20 second-half shots from the field.

DeSales ended the contest 8-of-45 from the floor — 0-for-16 from 3-point range — and committed 28 turnovers. The Irish surrendered the final 10 points of the game.

University Prep’s Olivia Dominguez sank two free throws with 1:25 remaining to put the Pumas up for good, 29-27.

“Poor execution on our part,” said DeSales coach Tim Duncan of the second-half debacle. “We couldn’t get the ball to the high post. Sometimes it was the post’s fault and sometimes it was the guard’s fault.”

DeSales post Allison Wujek scored a game-high 14 points and tied teammate Teresa Acock for rebounding honors with 10.

Molly vonBorstel tallied 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the TigerScots’ triumph.

Weston-McEwen led just 20-13 at halftime, but took control of the game in the second half. It held the Blazers to just one field goal in the third quarter and 14 points after halftime.

The victory came despite an 18-point, 21-rebound effort by 5-foot-10 Blazer forward Rachael Arand.

“We handled the pressure and boxed out,” W-M coach Amber Doremus said. “Rebounds were tough to come by with (Arand). She did a great job controlling the paint.”

Ashlyn Lyons led a trio of Irish players in double figures with 18 points as DeSales rushed out to an 11-0 lead and coasted home with the lopsided verdict.

“We’ve been getting out of the gate pretty quick,” Duncan said. “We came out and played well.

“We moved the ball well,” Duncan said. “We made passes that gave kids open looks.”

Hannah Leahy added 12 points for the Irish and Claire Conley contributed 11.

The TigerScots fell behind 16-7 after one quarter and were unable to overtake the Pumas.

vonBorstel had 13 points and secured a monstrous 19 rebounds.

Weston-McEwen committed 25 turnovers.

“They got a lot of offensive rebounds,” said Doremus, though her team still managed to outrebound University Prep, 50-48. “We’ll work on that and get better.

“In the second half, we did a much better job handling their pressure,” Doremus said. “We cut (down our) turnovers in the second half.”
