WALLA WALLA — Wa-Hi had six of its wrestlers qualify for next weekend’s Class 4A regional tournament after posting top-three finishes during district grappling action that occurred Saturday in the Blue Devil gym.
Logan Reardon won the 220-pound weight class while Will Babbit (126) and Zane Henderson (170) placed second in their respective classifications.
Blue Devils finishing third were Jose Albarran (113), Noe Gonzalez (120), and Quin Piver (285).
Another trio of Wa-Hi wrestlers were fourth and will serve as regional alternates — Evan Frank (138), Lucas Rassbach (182), and Luis Contreras (195).
The Blue Devils were third in the team standings with 191 points. Chiawana was first with 443.5 and Richland took second with 230.
Pasco was fourth with 154.5 points.
Following a bye, Reardon took just 30 seconds to finish off Antonio Cruz of Chiawana by pin, and claimed a major decision over Chiawana’s Abzael Loeza, 10-1, in the championship match.
“He (did) what he’s done all season,” Wa-Hi coach Dallas Jones said. “He goes out there and gets after it. He’s hungry for more.”
Babbit pinned Richland’s Anthony Lovato (3:23), decisioned Xavior Tobias of Pasco, 10-4, and was defeated by Brandon Gonzalez of Pasco, 12-1, in the title bout. Henderson edged Richland’s Ryker Mackey, 8-6, and pinned Chad White of Chiawana (3:22) before losing to Richland’s Cameron Simpson by technical fall, 21-6.
“Will had to battle back,” Jones said. “He showed a lot of heart. Zane wrestled a good tournament. He wrestled pretty well.”
Albarran gutted out a 14-10 decision against Pasco’s Luis Ochoa, lost a 6-2 decision to Bryce Buckley of Chiawana, 6-2, pinned teammate Joey Camacho in 3:33, and pinned Ochoa (4:22). Gonzalez pinned Moises Nava of Pasco (1:35), dropped a double-overtime verdict to Chiawana’s Pedro Murrillo, 4-3, won a 9-3 decision over Chiawana’s Corey Salinas, and took a major decision against Alex Webb of Richland, 14-3. After receiving a bye, Piver was pinned by Levi McBride of Chiawana (4:48), pinned Kurt Blackman of Wa-Hi (:28) and Nicholas Workman of Richland (:33), and suffered a 3-1 loss to Chiawana’s Martin Villanueva.
“Winning third is never easy to do,” Jones said. “They have to wrestle an extra match.”
Frank was pinned by Pryce Seely of Richland (3:52), decisioned Tristan Killian of Pasco, 8-4, and Chance Erwin of Richland, 12-5, before losing to Chiawana’s Abraham Ledezma by pin (3:19). Rassbach pinned Tyson Childs of Richland in 52 seconds, lost to Clayton Johnson of Chiawana, 12-6, pinned Benjamin Thompson of Wa-Hi, (1:34), and lost to Childs. Contreras pinned Pasco’s Geoffrey Westcott (1:43), lost to Bernardo Castillo of Chiawana, 7-3, decisioned Misael Estrada of Pasco, 6-2, and was nipped by Jordan Vaughn of Chiawana, 4-2.
“Evan was in a tough weight class,” Jones said. “He wrestled well to get himself into position to be an alterante. Lucas was a surprise. I didn’t expect him to be a contender. Luis had to suck it up and battle back. He wrestled with some heart.”
Next Saturday’s regional tourney will be held in Spokane.
