WALLA WALLA — A local man has been charged in Superior Court with throwing his infant daughter to the floor last month, causing a fractured skull.
Alan R. Hackney, 21, of 2107 Granite Drive, is accused of second-degree assault of a child — domestic violence.
Officials claim he intentionally assaulted one-month old Sophia J. Hackney on Jan. 4, inflicting substantial bodily harm.
Hackney and Sophia’s mother, Robyn Herald, took her to Walla Walla General Hospital that day because her head was swollen.
Personnel there found that Sophia’s skull had been fractured, so she was transferred to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Spokane.
During a subsequent interview with a police detective, Hackney reportedly said he remembered dropping Sophia on the floor when he was changing her diaper, but the drop was only from about a foot above a carpeted area.
After the detective confronted Hackney further, he admitted, “It was a hard drop,” according to a police report filed in court.
Hackney explained that Sophia had been crying, he was frustrated and tired, but said he dropped her accidentally.
Later, he admitted that “he lost control over his frustrations and threw Sophia hard to the floor,” the police report says.
Sophia reportedly was discharged from Sacred Heart, was returned to Walla Walla and is healing. Child Protective Services is involved in the case.
Hackney hasn’t been arrested, but is being summoned to court Feb. 19 for his first appearance on the charge, which was filed Friday.
If convicted, he faces a standard-range prison term of 31-41 months.
