Whitman students report being shot at outside town

WALLA WALLA – Two Whitman College students reported they were shot at Saturday while running on Lower Waitsburg Road near Robinson Ranch Road, according to a memo sent to faculty, staff and students by Dean of Students Chuck Cleveland on Monday.

According to Cleveland, the students heard shots from what sounded to them like a .22-caliber rifle. The unnamed students also reported several shots struck four to six feet away from them before they began running back toward campus.

“The students do not believe that the shooter was trying to hit them, but rather was telling them to get away from their land,” Cleveland wrote in the memo, encouraging students and faculty to avoid that area while running.

Neither Cleveland nor the Walla Walla County Sheriff’s office could be reached for comment this morning.
