YAKIMA — The Warrior women suffered a 22-point first half, trailed Yakima 38-22 at halftime, and despite battling back into the NWAACC East Region matchup with the Yaks, Walla Walla Community College lost 56-50 here Wednesday night.

“We started slow and they really jumped on us in first half,” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “We dug a big hole. But we upped the tempo and chipped away, and got within five down the stretch, but our shots just rimmed out. We just missed shots all night long.”

The Warriors shot 19-of-62 from the field on the night, for 31 pecent in the game.

“We haven’t necessarily played great lately,” Hazeltine said. “We didn’t get much from the bench, and just from a couple starters.”

Highlights of the game for WWCC were DeSales grad Caitlin Duncan, who had 21 points — including three first-half 3-pointers — and Michelle Seitz, who put up 15 points and nabbed eight rebounds.

“Caitlin’s playing so well,” Hazeltine said. “In the first half, we got virtually nothing except from Caitlin, she kept us in the game.

“And Michelle played well, also,” she said. “But everybody else struggled. We just need more of a team effort.”

On the bright side for the Warriors (8-2, 19-3), Columbia Basin (7-3, 11-11), which sits in second in the East behind WWCC, lost Wednesday to Wenatchee Valley, 66-62.

Spokane is third at 6-3 in the East, Yakima is now 6-4, and Big Bend and Blue Mountain are both 4-5.

“We’re still alone in first,” Hazeltine said. “But the teams behind us are creeping up. Nothing is set in stone, we could still miss the (NWAACC) tournament. The games that are left are really big. Everything remaining on the schedule is tough.”

The Warriors host 3-7 Wenatchee Valley Saturday at 2 p.m., and break out your pink attire for Breast Cancer Awareness.

“It just wasn’t a good night for us,” Hazeltine said of Wednesday’s game. “It’s good we can wake up and see there’s another game in a couple days, and hopefully we can make up for it.”
