MILTON-FREEWATER — Mac-Hi escaped with its first Greater Oregon League conference victory of the season over Ontario, 47-46, Saturday night.

The win improves Mac-Hi to 1-6 in the GOL and knocks Ontario out of a tie for first place.

The Pioneers led 47-45 with a second left when the Tigers’ Sebastian Deleon was fouled behind the arc and awarded three free throws.

Deleon made the first, but was called for a lane violation, negating the free throw. He missed the second chance and the Pioneers called timeout to ice the shooter.

He then missed the third chance and Mac-Hi had won.

Mac-Hi’s Carlos Angel finished with 18 points while Jake Podoski and Derek Richwine each grabbed nine boards.

“The guys have been working so hard all season,” Mac-Hi coach Travis Chester said. “So it was nice to come out on the right side of the game once in league. It was good to see the effort so late in the season.”

The Pioneers finish out the regular season Tuesday in LaGrande and Friday at home against Baker.
