WALLA WALLA — The 2013 Walla Walla Kids Read event will feature Matthew Holm, illustrator of the popular children’s graphic novel series “Babymouse,” and bestselling youth and young adult novelist Patrick Carman.

In its sixth year, Walla Walla Kids Read was established by Carman, a Walla Walla resident, to bring acclaimed writers and illustrators to community students.

This year’s Kids Read event will be held March 25-26 at Whitman College’s Cordiner Hall, and will reach more than 3,500 students from public and private schools in kindergarten through fifth grade. About 20,000 additional youths are expected to be reached through live webcast of the event. Holm will present to first, second and third-grade students, while Carman will speak to fourth and fifth-graders.

The event includes a community event March 26 at Edison Elementary School from 6-8 p.m. Children and families will have a chance to meet the authors and have books signed, while taking part in activities.

Holm is illustrator for the “Babymouse” series of books, which he created with his sister Jennifer Holm. Babymouse features a female mouse character as its lead and is one of the first graphic novel series written specifically for children.

Holm and his sister also collaborate on the “Squish” series of books.

Carman is the New York Times bestselling author of the “Land of Elyon” series of fantasy stories for youth, as well as “Floors,” Elliot’s Park,” and “Dark Eden.” His young adult works “Thirteen Days to Midnight,” a novel and the “Skeleton Creek” books and video hybrid series are being considered for feature films.

Carman’s new young adult novel, “Pulse,” releases later this month.
