WALLA WALLA — Whitman swimmer Karl Mering was named the Northwest Conference Championships Most Outstanding Male Swimmer Tuesday.

Mering, a sophomore, earned the honor after winning three individual events at the meet, and swimming as part of one title-winning relay.

Mering won the 100 free in 45.46 seconds, the 50 free in 20.87 and the 100 butterfly in 48.59. He swam on the 400 medley relay team that placed first in 3:06.1.

Mering’s times in the 100 free and the 100 fly qualified him for the NCAA Championships slated for March. His time in the fly was a new conference best, while his time in the 100 free broke the NWC Championships meet record.
