WALLA WALLA — Lower Waitsburg Road has been cleared as an exercise route after a Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office investigation into a report that a pair of runners were shot at Feb. 2.
According to Chuck Cleveland, the dean of students at Whitman College, two students reported they were running on Lower Waitsburg Road near Robinson Ranch Road when they heard gunshots, and what sounded like bullets hitting the ground near where they were running.
In a memo to students and faculty, issued this morning, Cleveland stated a Sheriff’s Office investigation found the shots originated with two teens, who had been target practicing on their family farm with .22-caliber rifles.
“There was no evidence that shots were fired at the students or that any bullets hit the road,” Cleveland wrote. “All runners and bikers should feel secure in using the Lower Waitsburg Road as an exercise route.”
