Superintendent chosen in Milton-Freewater

MILTON-FREEWATER — A new superintendent has been chosen to lead the Milton-Freewater School District.

On Tuesday, the Milton-Freewater School Board unanimously approved the hiring of Rob Clark, who is director of special programs for the Eastmont School District in East Wenatchee, Wash.

Clark earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Vanderbilt University, and has worked as an administrator since 1995, according to a district news release. Clark was superintendent of the Quilcene School District from 1995-97, then became superintendent of Reardan-Edwall School District until 2004. He then worked as superintendent of the Cascade School District in Leavenworth before moving to the Eastmont district in 2010.

Clark will start work in Milton-Freewater on July 1, in time for the start of the 2013-14 school year, pending contract negotiations. The School Board approved hiring Clark during its regular monthly meeting held Feb. 12.

Board member Mike Lesko said Clark emerged as the clear choice, for board members and community and staff. Lesko said Clark had tentatively accepted the position, and the district expected negotiations to finish up by the end of the week.

Clark will take over for James Reger, interim superintendent for the past two years. Reger was a principal in the district before being selected for the leadership position, and stayed on as superintendent an extra year to help the district conduct a thorough candidate search.

Reger has been praised for helping bring openness and honesty to the district and for mending strained relations between the district, staff and community.

Board member Dennis Burks said he appreciated Reger being involved in the selection of the new superintendent. The board expressed confidence that Clark would help maintain Reger’s progress.

Clark’s selection came after an initial pool of candidates was narrowed down to three finalists who were brought to the district for interviews and to meet with the board, with district staff and with community members. The two other candidates were Terry Brandon of the Marysville, Wash., School District and Ken Cox of the Vernonia, Ore., School District.
