Man sought in theft arrested after stopping traffic

BURBANK — A Kennewick man was arrested Tuesday morning by deputies after the man reportedly stopped traffic on U.S. Highway 12 and jumped into a stranger’s SUV in an attempt to escape.

According to a Sheriff’s Office report, deputies were searching for an unknown man in a 1988 Chevy pickup on investigation of scrap metal theft.

That man was Cashius Clay Ray, 45, of Kennewick, deputies said.

Ray’s pickup was spotted just before noon Tuesday behind Crazy Mary’s, 14813 Dodd Road, with a flat tire.

According to witnesses, Ray tried to stop traffic on Highway 12 and at one point was hit by a truck pulling a horse trailer.

Witness said Ray got in the rig, but then got out after witnesses tried to warn the driver.

Ray was later spotted by deputies near Ivarson Road, where he again attempted to stop traffic.

The report said a deputy spotted a number of vehicles pulled over. One of them was a 2003 Ford Escape driven by Kyle Conant, 28, of Wallula.

The deputy said Ray jumped into Conant’s vehicle, which is when the deputy crossed the highway and blocked Conant’s path.

Ray was booked in Benton County Jail on investigation of failure to comply.
