Whitworth downs Missionary men for 7th straight NWC title

SPOKANE — The Whitworth Pirates claimed their seventh straight Northwest Conference men’s basketball title here Saturday night after downing the Whitman Missionaries, 93-72, in the championship game of the NWC playoffs at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The triumph earned the No. 8 Pirates, now 24-3 overall, a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III tournament.

Mack Larkin led the Pirates with 22 points. Wade Gebbers added 16 points, Colton McCargar chipped in with 15, and Taylor Farnsworth scored 11.

Northwest Conference Player of the Year Ben Eisenhardt and Josh Duckworth scored 21 points apiece for Whitman, but no other Missionary player tallied more than six points in the game.

Whitworth, which made eight of its first 10 shots, connected on 38 of its 67 field-goal tries, 57 percent, while the Missionaries hit 38 percent — 21-of-55.

The Misionaries led just one time in the game. They took a 4-3 edge on an Eisenhardt jumper with 18:40 left in the first half.

Whitman, which ended the regular season in second place in the conference and advanced to Saturday’s final with a 90-78 home win over George Fox on Thursday, finished its season at 19-8.

It is incorrect to state that Whitman "finished it's season." According to the Whitman website, although Whitworth did claim the automatic berth to the NCAA DIII tournament, Whitman could still claim an at-large berth.
