PASCO — Walla Walla Community College’s women’s basketball team commenced the 2013 portion of its schedule here Saturday afternoon with a 59-54 victory over defending NWAACC champion Columbia Basin in the Eastern Region opener for both schools.

Guard Michelle Seitz scored a game-high 21 points as the Warriors, ranked No. 2 in the latest NWAACC coaches poll, improved to 12-1 overall and extended its winning streak to 11 games.

Hailey Felgenhauer was the only other WWCC player in double figures with 12 points.

Seitz and Felgenhauer grabbed nine rebounds apiece as Walla Walla outboarded the Hawks, 52-31.

The Warriors faced a 14-3 deficit in the early moments of the contest, but stormed back to claim a 28-26 lead at halftime.

“We had the jitters, which was a little surprising since we have a lot of sophomores (on the roster),” WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. “I felt good going in. We have a target on our back. Their kids came out with no worries. They jumped on us.

“We settled down in the second half and played a little better,” Hazeltine said. “Anytime you win over there, it is a good win. It’s never easy at CBC.

Amy (DeLong) gave us huge minutes as did MeShel Rad (five points apiece),” Hazeltine said. “Michelle had a great game. Caitlin Duncan had a big second half. Hailey had a big second half. The difference is that we offensive rebounded like crazy. Of those (20) offensive rebounds, there were a bunch of those we converted into points.”

Walla Walla hosts Blue Mountain Wednesday at 6 p.m.
