Knights struggle on the glass, fall to Jaguar girls

PASCO — Walla Walla Valley Academy had a chance to win its first Southeast 2B victory of the year Thursday.

The Knights entered the final minute of their girls basketball game with Tri-Cities Prep tied at 39, but a defensive breakdown and a series of turnovers down the stretch left WWVA with a 42-39 loss to the Jaguars.

“This was really the first real close (league) game we’ve had,” WWVA coach Lloyd Redberg said. “They’ve been lopsided both ways (wins and losses).

“I think I could have coached better down the stretch — we just panicked,” Redberg said. “We had time to do things and didn’t. We gave ourselves a chance, we just didn’t capitalize on it. We’ll live to fight another day.”

WWVA (5-6 overall, 0-4 SE2B) held a 22-15 lead at the half, but struggled with a re-energized Tri-Cities man defense after the break, commiting 16 of their 25 turnovers in the second half.

“We had some open shots in the first half that we didn’t knock down,” Redberg said. “In the second half (Tri-Cities) played a lot better defense, I have to give them credit. We didn’t get nearly as many opportunities in the second half.”

WWVA also struggled on the boards, with the Jaguars pulling down 44 rebounds to 33 from the Knights.

“We thought we played well against DeSales, we just didn’t board well,” Redberg said of his team’s 59-40 loss to the Irish Tuesday. “We thought we competed with them, just not on the boards. That’s the same thing here. Overall, our defense was good, but rebounding is part of that and we didn’t do well.”

Senior guard Emily Field led the Knights with 16 points and came up just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.

Amy Arnzen scored 12 and made the team’s only 3-pointer.

“One of the girls after the game said, ‘We’ve still got fire in our belly,’” Redberg said. “That’s part of the attitude. We’re not quitting.”

“We still believe we’re going to make it into the playoffs.”

The Knights host Dayton Saturday at 6 p.m.
